Mt Somers Station, a well-established mixed farming operation in the heart of Ashburton, Canterbury, is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Head Shepherd to join their team.
This is a full-time, permanent position that offers the right candidate an exciting opportunity to work in a high-performing livestock operation in one of New Zealand’s most scenic and productive farming areas.
The station spans approximately 3,400 hectares and supports a diverse livestock operation that includes 9,000 breeding ewes, 180 beef cows, and 400 dairy beef calves. It also serves as a support block for a 900-cow dairy unit, adding further variety and scope to the farming practices in place.

Job Requirements
To be considered for the Head Shepherd position, applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Demonstrated experience working in sheep and beef farming environments
- Skilled in the use of working dogs with good dog handling and control
- Physically fit and capable of working in outdoor and often challenging conditions
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to lead, support, and motivate a small stock team
- Understanding of pasture management and rotational grazing systems
- Sound knowledge of animal health and welfare practices
- Positive attitude, reliable, and proactive in taking initiative
- Commitment to safety and working within farm policies and regulations
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Farm Manager in day-to-day livestock operations.
- Coordinate stock work and team activities to ensure the smooth running of seasonal programs, including lambing, calving, shearing, and weaning.
- Monitor and manage livestock health and condition, responding promptly to any issues.
- Ensure effective pasture management, aiming for maximum utilization and sustainability.
- Maintain accurate livestock and paddock records as required.
- Supervise and work alongside staff to foster teamwork and a safe working environment.
- Operate farm machinery and equipment safely when required
