This role is based at the Lyttelton dockside workshops in Christchurch, where you’ll be part of a dedicated team supporting one of the region’s leading marine and industrial engineering firms.

Since 1953, Lyttelton Engineering has played a pivotal role in the Port of Lyttelton, specialising in ship repair, steel fabrication, boiler manufacture and servicing, and pressure vessel maintenance. With growing demand and ongoing projects, the company is now expanding its team to include multiple experienced mechanical professionals.

This full-time, permanent position offers both stability and variety. Occasionally, you’ll be deployed on short-term projects across New Zealand, with all travel-related expenses and allowances fully covered.

Job Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must:

  • Hold a trade qualification in mechanical fitting, machining, or turning
  • Have at least 3 years of hands-on experience in a jobbing workshop or similar environment
  • Be familiar with ship repair and boiler/pressure vessel maintenance
  • Be comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively
  • Have solid experience in manual machining (lathes, milling machines, drills, etc.)
  • Be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct small batch or one-off machining of metal components
  • Maintain and repair ship propulsion systems, auxiliary engines, and hydraulic systems
  • Inspect and service process heat plant boilers and pressure vessels
  • Assemble newly fabricated equipment and plant systems
  • Take part in on-site installations for large-scale heat plant projects
  • Provide routine and emergency maintenance at customer facilities
