Pāmu – Landcorp is looking for a dedicated and hard-working Dairy Farm Assistant to join the high-performing team at Somervilles Dairy. Located just outside Reefton in the picturesque Nelson / Tasman region of New Zealand, Somervilles Dairy is a progressive 500-hectare property that milks approximately 1,000 cows.
As part of this hands-on role, you’ll play an important part in the day-to-day operations of the farm, contributing to key farm tasks such as milking, calving, and feeding stock. You will work closely with your team to meet production and animal welfare goals while focusing on health and safety.

Job Requirements
To be successful in the role of Dairy Farm Assistant, you should have the following skills and qualifications:
- Previous Dairy Farming Experience (or a strong interest in developing your skills in dairy farming).
- Strong Communication Skills: The role requires both independent work and collaboration within a team. Clear communication is key to ensuring farm operations run smoothly.
- Proactive Attitude: A willingness to take initiative and contribute to the success of the farm, including supporting junior or new staff when needed.
- Commitment to Animal Welfare: A genuine interest in ensuring the health and well-being of livestock.
- Health and Safety Awareness: A good understanding of farming safety protocols and the ability to work within these guidelines to ensure a safe environment for all team members.
- Leadership Ability: Although not essential, experience in coaching and mentoring junior staff or new employees will be an asset.
- Valid Driver’s License: A restricted or full New Zealand driver’s license is required to operate farm vehicles and machinery safely.
- Willingness to Learn: This role is suited to individuals who are keen to learn and grow within the farming industry.
Responsibilities
As a Dairy Farm Assistant, you will have a range of responsibilities that are crucial to the smooth operation of the farm. Your primary duties will include:
- Milking the Cows: Ensuring the milking process is carried out efficiently and effectively.
- Calving and Stock Feeding: Assisting with calving and ensuring all animals are properly fed and cared for.
- Effluent Management: Managing effluent disposal and ensuring environmental compliance.
- Fencing: Maintaining the farm’s fences to ensure livestock are contained and safe.
- Spraying: Assisting with the spraying of crops and paddocks as needed.
- Supporting Production Goals: Helping to meet daily production targets while ensuring the highest animal welfare standards.
- Mentoring New Staff: Assisting in the training of new team members and supporting their integration into farm activities.
- Health and Safety: Contributing to the health and safety of the farm by following protocols and promoting a safe working environment.
