The Chicago Department of Aviation seeks dedicated Construction Laborers to join our team. This full-time, on-site position involves physically demanding labor in outdoor environments, specifically on airport infrastructure projects. Job Requirements
To qualify for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Completion of a Department of Labor (DOL) or City of Chicago Laborer Apprenticeship Program OR
- At least two (2) years of experience as a Construction Laborer with the City of Chicago OR
- At least four (4) years of experience as a Construction Laborer in general construction
- Some positions may require a valid State of Illinois Driver’s License
- Forklift operation requires training and evaluation per OSHA standards
- Apprenticeship Training Program Certificate(s) or Journeyman Card must be submitted at processing
- Candidates must pass a Ground Motor Vehicle Operating Regulation Basic Driving test (Yellow Stripe) within six months of hire
Key Responsibilities
As a Construction Laborer, your tasks will include:
- Excavating and grading work sites, digging trenches, and clearing obstructions
- Setting and removing braces and shoring equipment for excavation safety
- Assisting in concrete and masonry repairs, including sidewalks, curbs, and gutters
- Operating heavy machinery such as bobcats, skid steers, forklifts, and pallet jacks
- Mixing and pouring concrete, performing demolition work, and handling power tools such as jackhammers and sandblasters
- Assisting skilled trades workers by supplying tools, materials, and labor support
- Removing debris from work sites, tunnels, and underground structures
- Setting up barricades, traffic cones, and directing vehicular/pedestrian traffic
- Ensuring compliance with workplace safety regulations and city guidelines
- Heavy lifting (up to 100 lbs.) required
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and stretch for extended periods
- Capability to access confined or difficult-to-enter spaces
- Proficiency in handling tools and machinery

- Candidates must pass a background check and Security Threat Assessment (STA) before employment

Selection Process
